Darik's Boot and Nuke

Darik's Boot and Nuke ("DBAN") is a self-contained boot disk that securely wipes the hard disks of most computers. DBAN will automatically and completely delete the contents of any hard disk that it can detect, which makes it an appropriate utility for bulk or emergency data destruction.

DBAN is a means of ensuring due diligence in computer recycling, a way of preventing identity theft if you want to sell a computer, and a good way to totally clean a Microsoft Windows installation of viruses and spyware. DBAN prevents or thoroughly hinders all known techniques of hard disk forensic analysis.

DBAN is a fully supported product, but you must follow this protocol:

The fee for jumping the support queue and using the email support service is $10. All issues are handled by a developer.

Include this information if you ask a question or make a support request:

  1. The DBAN release that you are trying to use. (eg: dban-1.0.7)
  2. The DBAN media that you are trying to use. (eg: floppy disk)
  3. The computer manufacturer and model information. (eg: Dell OptiPlex 170L)
  4. The exact message that you see. (eg: "DBAN failed with error 255.")
  5. Anything else that is unusual about your computer or pertinent to the situation. (eg: "I am trying to hot swap my disks.")
